Finding Out if Your MacBook Battery is Faulty

In order to prevent a faulty MacBook battery from damaging your laptop further, you will have to be able to identify its symptoms and get it fixed pronto. What do some of these symptoms look like?

1. Test the Battery                      

A brand-new MacBook should be able to last you the entire day or at least about 12 to 13 hours a day for a MacBook Air and 10 to 11 hours for a MacBook Pro. This lifespan is bound to decrease as your MacBook gets older, but one way to track your battery’s performance is to do a battery test on your laptop.

In order to do this, simply:

1. hold down the Alt/Option key

2. Clock the battery charge icon at the top right of the desktop

3. you will see one of four battery statuses - normal, replace soon, replace now or service battery

It’s no surprise that if you see the “replace now” or “service battery” status, you will have to get it fixed right now.

2. The Age of Your MacBook

Apple has stated that MacBooks retain only 80% of its charge capacity after 1000 charge cycles (a charge cycle is complete every time the laptop hits 100%). If you have your laptop constantly charged at 100%, you can expect its battery performance to decrease from the third year onwards. However, if you are facing issues with your laptop’s battery when you are nowhere near 1000 charges, you should definitely consider getting it checked out by a professional or getting a replacement.

3. The Battery Won’t Charge

This would be the most common and obvious sign for a faulty MacBook battery - when your laptop cannot be turned on without being connected to the charger or is not charging at all. If this problem is not fixed by changing your charger, it is time to replace the battery.
