What to do if Your iPhone is Frozen
You are busy ranting to a friend about how unreasonable your superior is on your iPhone when you realise that whatever you are typing does not show up on your screen. That’s weird.
You try navigating to other apps, but your screen is frozen and unresponsive.
The device is stuck.
Sadly, frozen iPhones are not an uncommon issue amongst iPhone users. The same happens to Android users, too! It can happen to old models and even the newer ones. Here’s what you should do if you find that your iPhone is unresponsive.
Step 1: Figure Out Went Wrong
The first step is not to panic. Stay calm and try to figure out what caused your phone to freeze. Here are some of the most common issues:
1. Overheated battery
If you're constantly on your phone, your battery may have been working too hard to keep up with your activities. Another reason for overheating could be that you've left too many apps working in the background.
To prevent this issue from happening, don't forget to turn off the apps you no longer use and give your phone a break every once in a while. You may also want to start using the Low Power mode more often.
2. Software update errors
Many people complain that their iPhone became unresponsive after updating the software. However, this doesn't mean you should avoid your software updates as they're essential.
Try not to touch your iPhone until you're sure that the software update is finished.
3. Motherboard issues
The typical indicators of motherboard issues are lines or squares that might appear on your screen. However, there are some more subtle ways showing that something is wrong with your motherboard. One of them could be your iPhone freezing and not responding to your commands.
Step 2: Try Troubleshooting on Your Own
Now, when you know what the possible reasons are, here are some things you can do to try to fix them.
1. Try to restart your iPhone
Thankfully, most iPhone issues can be fixed by restarting your device. All you have to do is press the volume up command, following by the volume down command, and then hold the side button. Sometimes your iPhone will restart immediately, but not always. If that doesn't happen, just way until you see the Apple logo on the screen. You may need to wait a few seconds, but that will happen. Simply release the button to start restarting your phone.
2. Android users only: Take the phone apart and see if you can find anything amiss
This one is only for Android users, but even if you're an Android user you still have to be very careful when doing it. Open the backside of your phone carefully and see if any piece is out of place. This often happens if your phone has fallen to the ground or if you don't have a case to protect your phone.
Thankfully, these issues can often be easily fixed, in case there isn't anything missing. If a piece is missing, you may need professional help and it's better not to try to fix it on your own as you could do more harm than good.
3. Check for software updates/storage space
Of course, if your phone is completely frozen, you may not be able to do this. But ask yourself whether there have been any software updates you've been putting off for a while.
Or maybe you've got a notification that you're out of storage space, but you've been ignoring it. All those things can cause your phone to slow down and eventually start freezing. If you manage to open the menu, go to Settings and check for any updates or try deleting the apps you no longer use.
This could eliminate many issues that have been bothering you and prevent your phone from freezing again.
Step 3: Bring it to a Phone Repair Specialist
If nothing of the above helped, it means that you may need professional help. Contacting a repair store is a much faster and much safer solution than trying to find a quick fix online and here's why:
Professionals working in a repair store will be able to tell what parts of your phone are not working. They have seen these situations so many times, which enables them to do troubleshooting much faster and more accurate than an ordinary user. They will then replace the defective parts of the phone which will not only fix your frozen screen, but it could also make your phone run smoother and be more responsive.
Also, if your device is beyond repair, a repairs store is still the right place to be. They will be able to recommend a follow-up solution and help you consider all the options and make a decision that is the best for you.
